Ben Spivey

Hi, my name is Ben Spivey and I live in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Knox Writers’ House

How’d you get here?

Spivey

I was born in Decatur. I went to school here—I went to Georgia State University. I started living in Atlanta because…

Mercy Lawler

Because I forced him to.

KWH

Oh yeah?

Lawler

Because I didn’t want to live in Cumming, and my job was here. I’m a nanny, but it makes pretty good money, so it’s nice to be close to it.

Spivey

It’s been nice, the community and the connections we’ve made in Atlanta. It’s a pretty good writing community. We made a lot of new friends here. But it’s not a permanent home.

Lawler

Well, all of our old friends are here too.

KWH

Is it the place to move?

Spivey

It is, yeah.

KWH

What’s it like to be a writer in Atlanta, Georgia?

Spivey

Atlanta’s got a good scene. There’s a lot of really good, talented people here, a lot of people come here and tour and do reading, so you can outreach that way. We’ve seen a bunch of good readings, people coming through. I think most recently we saw Eugene Marten. He was touring for his book Firework. He was great. Kevin Sampsell was really great. A bunch of good writers come through here. It’s interesting to talk about community because a lot of the community here, for me, started on the internet and just happened to realize, Oh wait, we all live near each other, and then we started hanging out. I guess we have our own little crew now. Creative Loafing does pieces on the indie scene and one of their reporters has been really supportive of our little clique or crew or whatever you want to call it. He’s written about Blake and Amy and Jamie’s reading series a couple times, he interviewed me about my book release, and he came to it, even though there were only 15 people there, so it was nice for him to show up and care about it. So there’s some support like that.

Lawler

The art galleries are always so nice.

Spivey

The art galleries are always so nice. There’s two or three art galleries around here that have been really supportive.

Lawler

They always host readings

Spivey

Yeah, they’ll host readings. One of them is Beep Beep Gallery—they always have their doors open for a reading.
